Streetlights remain dark after two years

The dark streets have left several residents with no choice but to fork out extra money to upgrade the security at their homes.

Faulty streetlights in Proclamation Hill, west of Pretoria, remain dark after more than two years.

Residents said all their efforts to get the Tshwane metro to repair them had been fruitless so far.

Resident Mike Bosch said several complaints had been lodged with the metro after the streetlight cables were stolen.

“The streetlights in Transoranje Road have not been working and it is a high-risk area for smash and grabs.”

On some nights, gunshots were heard in the street.

“We are tired of these things happening in our area. The electricity department in town says we fall under the Atteridgeville electricity department,” said Bosch.

The dark streets have left several residents with no choice but to fork out extra money to upgrade the security at their homes. Some have even installed extra lights outside their yards.

The metro has so far not responded to requests for comment.
