R2,8 million water upgrade for north

The long-awaited replacement of the ageing water infrastructure in Pretoria North has started and should be completed next month.

Pretoria North residents driven to drink by water supply disruptions and constant water leaks from burst pipes have just a month for their problems to end.

More than 1 000 metres of asbestos and cement water pipes in Emily Hobhouse Avenue between Rachel de Beer and Suider streets and also Suider Street between Emily Hobhouse Avenue and Ben Viljoen Street have been dug up and will be replaced with PVC pipes and the project is scheduled for completion next month.

Contractor MIS Pipeline started digging just three months ago in June.

According to Tshwane metro spokesman Lindela Mashigo, the Pretoria North’s 60-year-old water reticulation system had reached its sell-by date and had to be replaced. The metro said it had to act as it was receiving daily complaints from residents about water supply disruptions and burst pipes.

The existing water reticulation system in Pretoria North is approximately 60 years old and has now reached the end of its design lifespan,” Mashigo said.

“The replacement includes all valves, communication pipes and, where required, water meters.”

He said the R2.8 million cost covered the rehabilitation and fixing of paving, concrete and road surfaces once the old pipes have been dug up and replaced.

In the current phase pipes in Emily Hobhouse Avenue between Rachel de Beer and Suider streets and on Suider Street between Emily Hobhouse Avenue and Ben Viljoen Street will be replaced. The metro says replacement in other areas marked “critical red” would start as soon as the current phase has been completed.

Mashigo said replacement of water pipes in the east of Pretoria have also commenced after mayor Kgosientso Ramokgopa made special funds available.
