Police operations yield positive results
The Sunnyside cluster police arrested over 70 criminals during weekend arrests.
Over 70 criminals were arrested during weekend crime combating operations in the Sunnyside, Brooklyn, Garsfontein, Villieria, Moot and Lyttelton policing precincts.
The arrests were made from Friday morning to Sunday morning.
“Amongst those who were arrested are two Sunnyside residents that were arrested for perjury. The police received a complaint on Friday of a house robbery that took place during the early hours at the Westbrook flats in Leyds Street,” said police spokesperson Captain Colette Weilbach.
The 49-year-old father alleged that his 27-year-old daughter heard a noise at the window and woke him up.
“He was confronted by two armed men when he went to investigate. He alleged that the men robbed him of cash, a 9mm pistol and a television. After a whole day’s investigation and further interrogation, the man confessed that he lied to the police and opened a false case. Both father and daughter were arrested,” she said.
She said the police wanted to send a clear message that this kind of criminality will not be tolerated.
“The intentional making of a false statement under oath is a very serious offence. A thorough investigation is done on all reported cases and if a person lied to the police they will have to face the full force of the law,” she warned.
During an operation on Friday evening, the Brooklyn police confiscated 447 bottles of liquor (more than 200 litres) from a guesthouse.
The police received complaints from residents in Waterkloof Ridge of loud music and noise after hours at a guest house in Rooiribbok Street.
An inspection was conducted and it was found that the guest house was trading without a liquor licence and that there was no fire, health and safety certificate. A case was opened at the Brooklyn police station for further investigation.
Other arrests included various offences such as assault, theft and shoplifting, a pedestrian source of danger, possession of suspected stolen goods, possession of drugs and dagga and 27 undocumented persons.
The suspects will appear in the Hatfield Community and Pretoria Magistrate’s Courts respectively on Monday.
