One Atteridgeville escapee hands himself over to police after escaping from police custody two weeks ago.
A man has surrendered to the police after he escaped from police custody in Atteridgeville two weeks ago.
Bethuel Fosi (25) and fellow-prisoner Abram Matombo (36) were set free after a police van was ambushed.
Atteridgeville police spokesperson Captain Thoman Mufamadi said police were still searching for Matombo, who faced robbery charges.
“Fosi was arrested for theft and is now also facing extra charges for escaping,” he said.
Fosi and Matombo got away when a police van carrying 11 prisoners from the Atteridgeville Magistrate’s Court to the Kgosi Mampuru II prison was ambushed by five men in a maroon vehicle.
After overpowering the police driving the prisoners, the men armed with pistols and rifles picked the lock to the back of the van and freed two prisoners.
A maroon sedan blocked the police in Matshiga Street, Atteridgeville, and the officers were held at gunpoint while the prisoners were freed.
As five other prisoners from Bela-Bela escaped in Pretoria a week earlier, a special team was set up to probe all the escapes.
