Crime getting out of hand in the west of Pretoria
Hercules police worried about rising crime in their area.
Crime is getting out of hand in Hercules policing sectors, police said this week.
Spokesperson Captain Bonginkosi Msimango said increased home burglaries and assault were of particular concern.
In Mountain View (sector 1) police had identified increasing burglaries targeting residential premises. In Daspoort (sector 2) theft of motor vehicles was a growing problem, particularly at the Daspoort clinic and Bougainville shopping complex.
Msimango warned residents to be vigilant.
“Claremont house break-ins and assault with intent to do grievous bodily harm at Gomorrah informal settlement in sector 3 are also a problem for us,” said Msimango.
He said in Andeon (sector 4), burglaries at residential premises and assault with intent to do grievous bodily harm was a concern.
“We have also identified other crime trends in the area and doing our best to deal with such robberies, road rage and various other crimes,” he said.
At the Daspoort and Hercules train station, commuters were warned to be careful of robbers. Msimango said people were robbed on their way to and from work with weapons other than firearms.
“We have noticed an increase of smash and grabs aimed at motorists and pedestrian robberies at the Louis De Waal Wisselaar bridge off-ramp, heading towards Eskia Mphahlele and Van Der Hoff roads,” said Msimango.
He said during peak hours at the R80 Mabopane highway and Van der Hoff Road, road rage was increasing. In addition theft from unattended vehicles parked on sidewalk had also increased.
“We urge the community to take serious precaution and try by all means not to fall victim to these crimes,” Msimango concluded .
He advised residents to call the police, sector commanders and CPF about any crime-related matters.
