Mamelodi kids get free bikes
Twenty free bikes were donated to the Tshwane Urban Riders cycling club courtesy of Momentum and PeptoPro.
Momentum and PeptoPro has given 20 bicycles to Tshwane Urban Riders cycling club to benefit kids in Mamelodi.
The club, of about 23 active and passionate members, was formed four years ago and rides out every weekend for fun and to training for the races.
Cecil Slabbert, chairperson of School Cycling in Gauteng has been involved with the club since the beginning of this year.
“That the club is focused on keeping the kids off the streets is a big motivation to the community and I am proud to be a part of it,” she says.
Fourteen-year-old Letlhogonolo Bogopa says riding is a very important part of his life.
“I am talented in cycling and it helps me stay away from drugs and all the bad things. There is no room for anything else, all I do is train,” he says.
This star cyclist is very motivated to reach his dream of being one of the best cyclists racing professionally when he is grown up.
“My secret to such success is training. I cycle for five kilometres at 40 kilometres per hour every day.”
Lilly Raphiri, mother of 15-year-old Basimane, says she is content with her son being with the club because it keeps him busy.
“Cycling keeps him off the streets and healthy. My son will be exposed to different places as long as he stays with the club.”
Her dream is to see her son racing for big clubs in countries such as Australia.
“I would be very happy if he could compete in the Cape Argus next year.”
