Residents of Claremont are complaining about sewage that has been overflowing from a burst pipe for almost a year on the corner of Kamp and Marina streets.

Resident Riana van Schalkwyk said leak had been reported several times.

“We spoke to one of the inspectors a few months ago and he told us that the Tshwane metro did not have money to repair the leak.

About a month ago, my husband was told by the municipal workers that the sewage leak will be fixed soon but we are still waiting,” she said.

Van Schalkwyk said the sewage leak posed a health risk to residents, especially the children.

“My house is about 300m away from the leakage, so the smell is getting to me. I even have sinus problems.

“The municipal workers returned on Sunday, but they only poured chlorine on the leakage.

I asked them why they did not just repair the leak and they told me they were doing what the metro had directed them to. The smell has gotten so much worse ever since the chemical was poured,” she said.

DA ward councillor Frik van Wyk said he reported the leak to the metro on Monday, and it will be repaired on Friday.

Tshwane metro were not available for comment.
