Metro acts against bus drivers

Tshwane Bus Services drivers who refused to handle cash in buses may face disciplinary action.

Disciplinary proceedings are in the pipeline against Tshwane bus drivers who went on strike recently.

“All those drivers who have been leaving commuters stranded have been identified,” said metro spokesperson Selby Bokaba on Friday.

“A legal process is underway to institute disciplinary proceedings against them.”

Bus driver affiliated to the SA Municipal Workers Union are opposed to carrying cash in their vehicles, saying this places them at risk of being robbery targets.

These drivers, about 80% of the total, downed tools last Thursday, refusing to work until an automated fare system had been introduced.

They went back to work on Tuesday, but refused to sell tickets on the buses. Only people with prepaid tickets could board their buses, resulting in many a frustrated commuter.

Bokaba said the action of the drivers constituted misconduct which the Tshwane Bus Services (TBS) management disapproved of.

He said the metro was committed to introducing an automated fare system on all TBS buses.

“We are already looking into the legal and procurement processes related to the contract of the project.”

Bokaba said the metro expected all drivers to continue selling tickets on buses, carry cash and pick up all commuters as usual.

He said the metro viewed any form of misconduct by any of its employees in a serious light.
