One of the two men who robbed a shelter in Hammanskraal has been arrested.

Police spokesperson, Constable Herman Moremi confirmed a 36-year-old man had been arrested in connection with the break-in and armed robbery at the Boikanyo Home for Children in Hammanskraal a week ago.

The second suspect is still on the run, said Moremi.

“The two men broke into the shelter, handcuffed staff at gunpoint before making off with valuables such as computers, microwaves, a television set with DVD player, nappies, groceries and some accessories,” said Moremi.

A case of armed robbery was opened and police were investigating.

“The 36-year-old suspect was arrested on Tuesday morning, and two tablets stolen from staff members at the shelter recovered,” he said.

According to Moremi, police also recovered a Hauwei cellphone, BlackBerry, and a Voda phone.

The man was arrested after following a tip-off from residents that a man was selling the stolen goods.

“We have been badly affected by the incident. This is a major setback but we thank God that no harm was done to the children or the volunteers,” said Super Boikanyo, shelter manager.

“It is sad that while we strive to make a difference in the lives of these children with special needs, criminals see us as a target,” said Boikanyo.

“Surely it cannot be easy to go on without the basics such as a fridge, a microwave, television, heaters, fans, basic groceries, basic medication, toys, story books, games, nappies and clothing.

The home is one of the charity organisations supported by Point of Difference, a section 21 non-profit organisation founded by Adele Segal, her husband Stephan and friend Adele Mynhardt.

This home was established six years ago by Elizabeth and her sister Betty, after the death of their aunt who suffered from cerebral palsy, spastic, a disorder that affects functions such as movement, learning, hearing, seeing and thinking.

Boikanyo is home to neglected children who are disabled, have cerebral palsy or are autistic.

Elizabeth and Betty opened Boikanyo to make a difference in the lives of people with similar condition to that of their aunt.
