Keep our children safe

New campaign to help protect the city's youth.

With the recent spate of attempted child abductions across the city, Rekord has decided to take a stand and help keep the city’s children safe.

The campaign, called #keepPTAkidssafe comes after Rekord has reported on five attempted abductions in public places in the city since the end of October.

The latest incident was on Monday 9 November in Pierre van Ryneveld, in Centurion.

Chevone Venter was walking home down Pieter Botha Avenue with her seven-month-old son when she was stopped by four men in red hoodies and gloves. The men demanded she hand over her son.

Venter refused and instead offered her cellphone, wedding ring and bank cards. The men refused and attempted to steal Venter’s son from his pram.

The men were eventually scared off by a passing white bakkie. Venter also took this opportunity to grab her son from his pram and run home.

This follows on four other attempts reported across the city, including Centurion and the east of Pretoria in the past month.

Rekord, with the help of key role-players, including, eBlockwatch Orange Fox Security, Bull Security, Moot Crime Prevention and the Sinoville CPF, is launching the #keepPTAkidssafe campaign.

The campaign that will be run via a WhatsApp group, will give parents a platform to report any attempted abduction and immediately be put in contact with the nearest police station, CPFs and security agencies.

Parents will also be warned of nearby incidents, and receive regular tips on how to keep young children safe in public spaces.
