A robber was shot dead by police in Hammanskraal on Wednesday afternoon.

Police spokesperson Captain Tshekiso Mofokeng said the Build IT store in Hammanskraal was robbed around 15:30.

“Five suspects entered the store carrying school bags, all armed with pistols. They took of cash and a DVD player.”

Mofokeng said a police intervention unit acting on a tip-off confronted the five as they were about to leave the scene of the crime.

“When they saw the police, they opened fire and the police retaliated, killing one suspect. Another suspect was caught and arrested on the scene. The other robbers escaped in a red Nissan Almera.”

Mofokeng said an undisclosed amount of money was found and two unlicensed firearms were recovered. The Nissan was later found abandoned.

“The 29-year-old suspect will appear in court soon,” he said.
