Cigarettes worth R500 000 have been recovered by Pretoria police after they caught two men in possession of a stolen truck
Central spokesperson Captain Augustinah Selepe said two were arrested on Wednesday after they allegedly hijacked a truck carrying cigarettes on the N1 in Hammanskraal.
She said the truck driver was pushed off the road by five men driving a blue BMW and caravan taxi.
“They stopped in front of the truck, held him at gunpoint and loaded cigarettes inside white Nissan Panel Van,” said Selepe.
She said police received information to be on the lookout for Nissan Panel Van that was driving towards old Pretoria Road to Pretoria West or Atteridgeville.
Selepe said the Gauteng Flying Squad pounced on the suspects in Charlotte Maxeke street.
Two of the five men were caught when the five made a run for it.
Police seized a pistol and went to the Mabopane house of one of the arrested men where they found cigarettes worth R500 000.
She said the two men aged 38 and 40 would appear at the Pretoria Magistrate’s Court on Friday on charges of hijacking, armed robbery and possession of an unlicensed fire arm and ammunition.
Selepe said police investigation was continuing.
