Robbers fire rounds at security officers

A group of unknown men fired shots at security officers after they were caught breaking into a house in Groenkloof.

About six rounds of ammunition were fired at security officers on Sunday when they interrupted a house breaking in Groenkloof.

Hi-Risk Unit spokesperson Arthur Crewe said the officers were patrolling on Wenning Street when they noticed a suspicious Mazda 3 hatchback in a driveway.

“When they started to investigate, multiple shots were fired at them. The officers returned fire and that’s when a chase ensued,” he told Rekord.

Crewe said the officers lost track of the men they were pursuing on George Storrar Street due to the traffic.

“We lost them towards the Fountains circle. We suspect they were heading to Tembisa.”

He said the vehicle was known to be used in various house robberies in Elardus Park and Waterkloof.

“There is a history of the vehicle having been used in house robberies. Unfortunately it doesn’t have registration plates. The car was occupied by about four men and they managed to only flee with a plasma TV.”

None of the security officers were injured in the shootout, Crewe said.
