A husband and wife remain in a serious condition after being shot during a robbery in Lyttelton on Monday evening.

Emer-G-med spokesperson Braam Kruger said the husband was in a critical condition.

“The wife sustained moderate injuries. Both remained at the Unitas Hospital,” said Kruger.

Robbers were attempting to steal jewellery in a house in Burger Avenue and one was shot dead.

Garsfontein police spokesperson Warrant Officer Dave Miller said two were arrested and the fourth escaped.

“The men were in the process of taking jewellery from the woman when the husband confronted them,” said Miller.

He said there was a shootout and one of the robbers was hit and died on the scene.

The other two were arrested not far from the house with the help of response teams.

Miller said the robbers were in their late teens and early twenties.

“One firearm was recovered at the scene,” he said.

Miller said an investigation would determine if the men were part of some larger syndicate.

He said the husband was hit in the chest, and the wife in the arm.

OrangeFox spokesperson Vanessa Jacobs said a number of security companies – MonitorNet, Lyttelton sector two CPF members – rushed to the scene after gunshots were heard.
