It is alleged two women were on their way home yesterday when the driver noticed a silver SUV driving behind them in Goedeburg, on the East Rand, Benoni City Times reported.
After she had stopped at the gate of the complex, she noticed two men with balaclavas approaching her car. She sped into the complex, but was followed by the suspects.
Acting Benoni police cluster commander Brigadier Poobalan Subbiah said one of the men smashed the window on the driver’s side with a hammer and demanded money.
“The other suspect was at the passenger side and bit the passenger on the chin and arm,” added Subbiah.
“He then grabbed her handbag and rings from her finger. There was R6 000 cash in the handbag,” said Subbiah.
A neighbour saw the commotion and fired a shot with his revolver.
Two other shots were fired, though Subbiah could not confirm who had fired them.
The suspects ran and jumped over the gate, got into their vehicle and drove off.
A case of attempted robbery and damage to property was opened. No suspects have been arrested.
