Union marches against cop killings
Police union protest against police killings.
Several Pretoria streets became a sea of red on Friday as Popcru marched against police killings.
Hundreds of Police and Prisons Civil Rights Union members clad in bright red colours danced and sang their way from Marabastad to the Union Buildings to hand over a memorandum of demands.
Popcru accused the South African Police Service management of not doing enough to protect police officers’ lives.
Bright red placards reading “POPCRU say NO to Police killings”, “Police Lives Matters” and “Criminals Must Fall” were held aloft as the protesters made their voices heard.
They called for police killing investigations to be made a top priority.
Popcru members expressed their support of the four Krugersdorp officers were arrested after they shot dead a fugitive.
The protesters remained peaceful on their march before handing over their memorandum.
During the demonstration Popcru leadership chanted: “Killers (police killers) must be shot.”
They thanked members for coming out despite “being told they would be fired”.
Popcru held a similar protest in Johannesburg on Wednesday.
Popcru’s first deputy president Nkosinathi Mabhida reportedly said Popcru would not pray for police killings to stop but would rather encourage police officers to kill criminals.
