I love you daddy singer dies

The I love you Daddy singer, Ricardo Groenewald died on Wednesday evening after a long battle with cancer.

Three days after seeing his son perform his 1987 hit I love you Daddy live on stage on Sunday, 1980s pop star Ricardo Groenewald (43) died in the intensive care unit of the Tygerberg Hospital in Cape Town.

Groenewald made his last public appearance at a packed hall at His Grace Performing Arts Centre in Parow, in a wheelchair, to watch his son perform I Love You Daddy in tribute.

The singer was admitted to hospital on Tuesday, where he lost his battle with cancer on Wednesday.

He leaves behind his wife Helen and three children.

The Port Elizabeth-born Cape singer became an instant hit at the tender age of eight, performing alongside US singer-songwriter Stevie Wonder on the Children Of The World tour in 1989.

Ricardo, who was a Christian, had released three gospel albums.

Pastor Julian Claassen, spiritual advisor and spokesperson for the Groenewald family, said in a statement that his beloved wife was by his bedside while the doctors were working on him.

“On behalf of Helen and the family, we want to thank everyone for the ongoing support,” he said.
