Police visit Salvokop homes to discuss domestic and child abuse

Central police visited almost every home in Salvokop on Thursday, on a campaign to inform residents about the importance of reporting domestic violence and child abuse.

Police went from door to door informing members of the Salvokop community on Thursday about the importance of reporting domestic and child abuse.

Central police spokesperson captain Augustinah Selepe said police visited almost all the houses in Salvokop to inform them about the importance of reporting such matters.

“Neighbours should not be afraid to report the perpetrators because sometimes they fear if they report these incidents, there would not be any food on the table as the perpetrator might be the breadwinner,” Selepe said.

Some 250 children in the homes visited, were each given a goodie bag and a colouring book by police.

“We visited particularly the vulnerable groups, which include women, children, the youth, the elderly, the LGBTI [Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender and Intersex] community, and others,” Selepe added.

She also said some of the mothers looked the other way when their partners sexually abused their children because they were afraid to lose the financial stability the partners provided to the family, and that needed to change.
