Domestic worker walks free
A domestic worker was instead convicted of stealing a laptop and her sentence was suspended for five years.
A domestic worker accused of having planned to kill and rob a DA councillor has walked out of the Pretoria North Magistrate’s Court a free woman.
Magistrate Nico Noeth said on Tuesday the court did not have concrete evidence that Mariam Kekane (37) indeed conspired to murder the councillor.
Fake ID’s, bank statements and salary slip of the councillor were apparently found in Kekane’s her room in Kwamahlangla.
Noeth said the court could not charge her in this regard as an identity theft case had to be opened at the police station in Kwamaghangla.
Kekana was instead convicted of stealing a laptop and her sentence was suspended for five years.
The councillor, who asked not to be named, believed the investigative officer from Wonderboompoort police station had sufficient evidence to charge her Kekana with identity theft.
“I have to lay a charge of identity theft again and the investigation must run its course again.”
Kekane worked for the councillor for about two years.
“I trusted her and treated her like one of my own children,” the councillor said.
She said she realised something was amiss when a man called her, saying the domestic worker had offered him a laptop which apparently belonged to the councillor’s partner.
This culminated into charges that Kekana had plotted to kill and rob her employer.
The councillor said this week: “I am not satisfied with the outcome. I did change my locks, but I still live in fear.”
