The police are expected to launch Operation Fiela in Gauteng on Tuesday, after a similar operation in Western Cape and Limpopo resulted in the destruction of illegal shebeens and thousands of litres of alcohol.

Police spokesperson Lieutenant-Colonel Lungelo Dlamini said #LiquorDestruction campaign was meant to reduce crime.

“We know alcohol consumption results in a high rate of crime, therefore we will seize all illegal DVDs and CDs and destroy all liquor,” Lt Col Dlamini said.

The police said since the relaunch of the operation for the festive season, there had been 152 people arrested for various crimes of which 71 were for public drinking.

Dlamini said people who sold alcohol without licences would be targets of the operation.
