Tips on how to speak to your teenager about alcohol

Children need guidance when it comes to alcohol use.

Today’s teenagers, probably much like how you were as a teenager, will tell you they know everything.

With the added accessories of cell phones, access to social networks and
to the vast world of the internet, they probably sound and act like young adults already. Regardless of how mature they may seem, if they are under 18, they are still children and need the guidance of parents and adults in the community.

Here are some tips on how to talk to your teenager about alcohol:

Encourage conversation. Build a relationship with your child and encourage them
to talk about whatever interests him or her. Be open minded, listen actively and give your child a chance to teach you something new. Your active listening to your child’s enthusiasms will pave the way for conversations about topics that concern you, such as the use of alcohol.

Be clear in your mind about what your expectations are for your child with
respect to alcohol consumption. Discuss this with the other parent and try to agree on a common approach.

Plan your meeting. What things do you want to communicate? What do you want to know from your child?
