Defence intelligence loses 50 laptops

50 new laptops vanish from DI headquarters.

50 brand-new laptop computers delivered to the defence intelligence (DI) headquarters are nowhere to be found.

Department of Defence spokesperson Siphiwe Dlamini confirmed that the laptops were gone, but insisted that it has not yet been established if they were stolen.

“An investigation into how the laptops went missing is underway,” said Dlamini.

Dlamini said the laptops were delivered to the DI during the Christmas week, but exactly when they disappeared has not been determined.

He could not confirm whether any staff were on duty at the time.

Around the same period, the State Security Agency (SSA) was robbed of R17 million in foreign currency.

Hawks spokesperson Brigadier Hangwani Mulaudzi has since confirmed that two men have been arrested in connection with the robbery at the SSA.

It is not known if they are in any way linked to the missing laptops. The Hawks are not involved with the investigation into the disappearance of the laptops.
