The SA National Civic Organisation (Sanco) on Sunday condemned the “heinous brutal assault” on an 83-year-old KwaZulu-Natal motorist in a road rage incident, The Citizen reported.
“We are concerned about the barbaric incident and lawlessness that is targeted at the vulnerable in our communities and appeal to members of the public to assist police in their investigations to bring the road bully to book,” Sanco national spokesman Jabu Mahlangu said.
Mahlangu wished the injured victim, who is said to be in a critical but stable condition in hospital, a speedy recovery.
Crisis Medical spokesperson Kyle van Reenen said on Saturday the 83-year-old man was fighting for his life after he was assaulted following a minor road accident on Friday night.
Paramedics were called to the scene of a motor vehicle collision on Inanda Road in Newlands, Durban, at about 8pm, and on arrival found that two cars had collided at slow speed with little to no damage reported to either.
“Following the collision, it is alleged that the occupants of one of the vehicles assaulted and beat the elderly driver of the other before fleeing the scene. The elderly man was found lying on the roadway heavily disorientated and in a serious condition,” he said.
Intermediate life support intervention was needed to stabilise him before he was placed onto a specialised stretcher for suspected neck and spinal cord injuries and taken by ambulance to a nearby hospital for the immediate care he required. He remained in a serious but stable condition.
“The exact facts pertaining to the incident are not confirmed and are unclear and will form the subject of a South African Police Service investigation,” Van Reenen said.
