State Security burglars appear in court

Two men linked to the State Security Agency burglary appear in court.

One of the two men linked to the State Security Agency’s burglary in Pretoria during the Christmas weekend, will appear in the Pretoria Magistrate’s Court on Monday.

Hawks spokesperson Brigadier Hangwani Mulaudzi said both men remained in police custody after one of them appeared in the court on Friday.

Mulaudzi said the man would reappear on 19 January.

He said police initially thought both men would be taken to court together, but that had not been the case.

“We will get a clearer picture of what will transpire after the man appears in court.”

The two men were arrested last week on Tuesday and Thursday.

Mulaudzi, however, said the investigation continued.

“We are still pursuing other suspects,” said Mulaudzi.

An estimated R50 million in foreign currency was stolen from the State Security Agency’s headquarters in Pretoria, and the police remained silent on the identities of the suspects.

But reports indicate the men are agency employees as this could explain how they were able to gain access to the high-security office and escape with the millions.

The Hawks have offered a reward for any information that would lead to the accomplices.

A hooded man was seen on CCTV footage walking down the agency corridor on the date of the burglary.

Mulaudzi said the group of men entered the premises on Boxing Day and stole money from a safe before fleeing.

The crime was only discovered the following day, he said.

He reiterated that although the Hawks had made significant progress in their investigation, the public’s assistance with information was still required.

Anyone with information should contact Colonel Tolie Vreugdengburg at 082-451-7226 or Colonel Makasela Nkuna at 082-565-8506.

“All information will be handled with the strictest of confidence if it can aid in the apprehension of these dangerous criminals,” said Mulaudzi.
