A signal jammer has been found in the heap of cigarette boxes in a hijacked mini bus in Eldoraigne, Centurion, on Monday afternoon, police confirm.

This after four men were arrested after a high speed chase and gunfight between the police and the gang, causing the driver of the minibus to lose control on the corner of Wierda and Old Johannesburg roads.

A signal jammer is used by car thieves to disable remote-locking of cars. When the car remote and the jammer are pressed simultaneously, the motorist cannot lock the car by remote.

Wierdabrug police spokesperson Captain Huma confirmed on Tuesday morning, that the minibus had been hijacked in Pretoria West.

“A signal jamming device and cigarette boxes were found in the minibus,” Huma said.

She said two men sustained gunshot wounds in the shootout with the police — one in both legs and the other in his upper body.

The men were treated on the scene and then taken to hospital.

Police had earlier spotted the men offloading goods from the mini bus in central Pretoria. When the men saw the police, they sped off leading to the chase along the Old Johannesburg Road towards Centurion.

Huma said members of private security firm, OrangeFox, assisted in the pursuit.

She said the men would appear in the Pretoria Magistrates Court soon.

OrangeFox spokesperson Vanessa Jacobs said she and her unit were almost hit by the speeding vehicle in Old Johannesburg Road.

Jacobs said another vehicle, other than the minibus, was involved in the chase.

She said ahead of the minibus, carrying a consignment of cigarettes, was a BMW.

“Shots were being fired from the BMW,” Jacobs said, adding that when the minibus went out of control, the BMW had sped away.

Jacobs said Emergency Medical Services, OrangeFox and Critical Life Assist treated the injured men.
