Two appear in court after high speed chase arrest

Two appeared in the Pretoria Magistrate's Court after police tailed them from Pretoria to Centurion in a high speed chase on Monday afternoon.

Two of four men arrested in possession of a signal-jamming device hidden inside a heap of boxes in a minibus on Monday, in Eldoraigne, Centurion appeared in court on Wednesday.

Wierdabrug police spokesperson Captain Agnes Huma said Tebogo Mpho (29) and Douglas Phasha (35) appeared in the Pretoria Magistrate’s Court briefly this morning but remained in custody as their case was postponed to Wednesday 20 January.

Huma said the other two men who were injured in the high speed chase to avoid capture remained in hospital under police guard.

The is signal jammer used by car thieves to disable remote-locking.

The four were arrested after a high speed chase which involved the exchange of gunfire with the police, causing the driver of the minibus to lose control on the corner of Wierda and Old Johannesburg roads.

Huma confirmed on Tuesday morning, that the minibus had been hijacked in Pretoria West.

She said the two men sustained gunshot wounds in the shootout – one in both legs and the other in his upper body.

The men were treated on the scene and then taken to hospital.

This was after police on Monday morning, spotted the men offloading goods from the minibus in central Pretoria.

When the men saw the police, they sped off headed and towards Centurion along the Old Johannesburg Road.

Huma said members of private security firm, OrangeFox, assisted in the pursuit leading to the arrest of the four men.
