Two men handed themselves over to Eersterust police last week for the murder of 23-year-old resident Ruben Lawrence.

Police spokesperson, Sergeant Sam Shibambo said the two men, both in their early thirties, was taken into custody on 4 January.

The victim was killed the previous night when he was shot four times by one of the men.

Lawrence, members of his family and friends apparently went to a party on Saturday night after which he was murdered in the early hours on Sunday.

Lawrence and his group was pursued by two men who apparently suspected Lawrence of having stolen money from them.

“The two suspects in a red Hyundai Atos rammed into the back of a Fiat Palio that was driving on the Hans Coverdale road in Eersterust,” said Shibambo in a statement.

Lawrence got out of the Fiat to confront the driver of the other vehicle.

“An argument ensued between the two drivers and it is alleged that the driver of the Hyundai shot the other driver on his upper body and he fell to the ground,” Shibambo said.

The gunman and his friend then ran away, leaving the Hyundai behind.

Lawrence was rushed to Mamelodi Day hospital, but was pronounced dead on arrival.

“Police were summoned to the scene and immediately launched a manhunt for the two suspects.”

Shibambo said the two men, accompanied by their attorney, turned themselves in the very next day.

The two appeared in the Pretoria Magistrate’s Court on 6 January and would appear again on Monday.
