Bail application postponed for third time in Poortman case
The bail application for the three men accused in the murder of slain captain Kenneth Poortman has been postponed for the third time. All the accused will be expected to appear in the Pretoria Magistrate's court on Wednesday 27th January.
The three men accused of murdering captain Kenneth Poortman will remain in custody after their case was postponed for the third time on Monday morning.
The men briefly appeared in the Pretoria Magistrate’s Court.
Sipho Tlou (25), Thabo Mampa (age undisclosed), Themba Mbowane (34) have applied for bail, while the fourth accused Steven Meda is illegible for bail as he is an illegal citizen.
Captain Poortman’s body was discovered by his wife Sergeant Ann Poortman on the side of the Mabopane highway after she was called to the scene to take a statement as part of her duties as a police media spokesperson.
There are allegations that Poortman was playing a game of pool in the Blue Room club in Central on the night he was apparently murdered.
The men are facing a schedule six offence which raises the requirement for them to be granted bail. Normally, a presiding officer must satisfy the interest of justice requirement but for schedule six offences, the accused must prove exceptional circumstances exist.
Their bail application will be heard on 27 January at the Pretoria Magistrate’s Court.
