Hawks on verge of breakthrough in state security agency case

Hawks spokesperson says a third suspect has been identified in State Security Agency theft case as appeared in Court on Tuesday.

The case of the two men implicated in the state security multi-million rand theft has been postponed to February 18, says the Hawks.

The two appeared in the Pretoria Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday.

Hawks spokesperson Brigadier Hangwani Mulaudzi said Khayalethu Mgatyelwa was out on bail while William Mmotong Mgatyelwa was still in custody for his bail hearing on 25 January.

Muluadzi said the Hawks had identified the third man suspected the theft but more work was needed before he could be charged.

Mgatyelwa and Mmotong are accused of stealing R17 million in foreign currency from the agency’s headquarters in December last year.

Mulaudzi said one of the accused was a security guard and the other the “close protector” to the director general at the agency’s foreign department.

The men were arrested two weeks ago.

He said a group of men entered the premises on Boxing Day. One of them was captured on a CCTV camera casually walking down the agency’s corridor. They stole the money from a safe and fled, but the crime was only detected the following day.

He again asked the public for information that could assist in the arrest of the rest of the gang to contact Colonel Tolie Vreugdengburg at 082-451-7226 or Colonel Makasela Nkuna at 082-565-8506.

“All information will be handled in the strictest of confidence if it can aid in the apprehension of these dangerous criminals,” said Mulaudzi.
