A 39-year-old man was arrested for using a police blue light to rob a Somalian man in Atteridgville on Tuesday evening.
Erasmia police spokesperson constable Tumisang Moloto said the victim was allegedly driving on Maunde Road when he was stopped by two men in a white Toyota Hilux which was flashing blue lights.
“Two suspects approached the victim and one pointed a gun at him. They robbed him of an undisclosed amount of cash and his cellphone,” Moloto explained adding the driver of the Hilux remained behind.
The police tactical response team patrolling in the area spotted the vehicle and immediately drove to the scene.
“When the suspects saw the police, they sped off and a chase ensued until the police cornered them in Matlhadi Street. Two suspects escaped on foot,” Moloto said.
The driver, who was found in possession of an unlicensed firearm and a blue police light, was arrested.
“The vehicle was reported hijacked earlier this month in Attridgeville. The firearm will be taken for ballistics to verify if it had been involved in any other crimes,” Moloto said.
A case of armed robbery was opened against the man and he will appear in the Atteridgeville Magistrate’s Court soon.
