Man held for attempting to shoot police

A man was arrested for attempting to shoot at police in Mamelodi after complaints that he was robbing people.

A Mamelodi robber was shot and wounded when he pulled a gun on police this week.

Police spokesperson Warrant Officer Michael Mbewe said police were alerted about a gun-wielding man robbing people in Mamelodi East Phase 3 on Wednesday.

“A search was organised and the man was spotted at an informal settlement in Extension 10. As police approached him, he pulled out a gun but police moved quickly and shot him in the lower part of the body,” Mbewe said.

The 31-year-old man was then taken to hospital where he was placed under police guard.

A 9mm pistol with filed off serial numbers was recovered.

“Investigations are underway to establish if the suspect could have been involved in other robberies around Mamelodi. He will appear in court on charges of attempted murder, pointing a firearm and possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition,” Mbewe said.
