According to a Facebook page by Intelligence Bureau SA, the oranges are filled with nails and then strewn on the road. When motorists drive over them, their tyres get damaged, they are forced to stop and this is when hijackers pounce, Sandton Chronicle reported.
Sandton police spokesperson Warrant Officer Moses Maphakela said the new crime trend was noticed in Rustenburg and, so far, there have been no reports of such cases in Johannesburg.
The Intelligence Bureau SA page warned all motorists to be vigilant and to avoid driving over oranges or any fruit in the road.
