Baby inside pram in attempted theft

An baby was confirmed to be inside the pram involved in the attempted theft of shoes by three men on Wednesday.

A baby was inside a pram three people used in an attempt to smuggle stolen shoes out of a shop at the Mall@Reds shopping mall this week.

OrangeFox spokesperson Vanessa Jacobs said a five-month-old baby boy was in the pram as the three were loading shoes worth R 5000 into it.

They were stopped and apprehended by security staff as they were trying to leave the shop.

Jacobs said when the man and two women were asked whose baby this was, they said they did not know.

The three were arrested and taken to Wierdabrug police station.

“The three and the baby were taken by police,” Jacobs said.

The stores management confirmed the baby being inside the pram and also said the three denied having any knowledge of the baby.

Orange Fox Security general manager Andre Hills said the three made their way into the store on Wednesday afternoon, pushing a children’s pram.

“The three were loading shoes into the pram,” said Hills.

He said a security officer picked them up on CCTV surveillance and alerted security staff immediately.

They reacted swiftly and stopped the three. As the security officers were about to apprehend the man and women inside the store, the man tried to escape by running away.

“Security inside the store apprehended the two women,” said Hills.

A woman saw the man hiding under a bakkie in the parking lot and alerted a security officer.

A security officer from OrangeFox arrested the man.

Wierdabrug police could not be reached immediately on Thursday.
