Criminals target WiFi spots
Mabopane police warn residents to be careful while accessing wifi hotspots.
Criminals in Mabopane and Soshanguve have started targeting people using public WiFi access points.
Police spokesperson Constable Petunia Chabangu warned residents who frequented WiFi hotspots near schools in the area, to be careful.
“We want to alert people who are using WiFi to access internet at the schools and libraries to be careful of the criminals because they are robbing them, especially from 14:00 and into the evening,” she said.
She urged the public against being alone to avoid cellphone, laptop and tablet robberies as the thieves were armed with knives or guns.
“Several cases have been reported in recent weeks, and unfortunately most of the victims could not identify the criminals,” she said.
There had been about 12 crimes of this nature since last month.
Hotspots are Lebanon, Slovoville, Busheveld Road, and Molefe Makinta Road.
