A 56-year-old man was arrested for allegedly shooting and killing his neighbour’s donkey at Jericho, north of Pretoria on Monday morning. The donkey was shot in the jaw.

Police spokesperson Colonel Sabatha Mokgwabone confirmed the incident. “The arrested man will face a charge of animal cruelty and negligence with a firearm,” said Mokgwabone.

SPCA inspector Mishack Matlou said a resident contacted the police and SPCA saying his neighbour had shot and killed his donkey.

“Police, accompanied by officials from the SPCA immediately rushed to the cruel attacker’s home but he was not there. However, we were led to an address where we arrested him,” Matlou said.

The man allegedly shot and killed the donkey after it had entered his yard and vandalised plants.

The donkey also had serious injuries on a leg. The animal’s owner, Itumelong Tlhwaele said he was shocked by the senseless killing of his donkey, X3 as he was called.

“I am still hurt. He must get punished for what he did to my donkey,” said Tlhwaele.

“The offender has been arrested. He is being kept in police custody pending a forensic examination. He is expected to appear in court soon,” said police.

Matlou has condemned incidents of animal cruelty in the community.

“It is not the first time someone has hacked, shot and killed innocent animals in the community,” he said.
