Bail for third suspect in agency theft

A third man linked to the State Security Agency theft was arrested by the Hawks after the elite force published his picture in the media last week, calling on the public to help identify him.

Two men accused of planning the state security agency theft were granted bail on Wednesday, at the Pretoria Magistrate’s Court.

Albert Ramabele and his two co-accused would be back in the Pretoria Magistrate’s Court on 18 February, the Hawks said.

Ramabele and William Mmotong were granted bail of R10 000 each.

Hawks spokesperson Brigadier Hangwani Mulaudzi said the men were out under strict conditions.

Ramabele was arrested after the Hawks published his picture in the media last week, to appeal for any information on his whereabouts.

Magistrate Matric Luphondo is reported to have noted that the state did not object to bail.

The third accused, Khayalethu Mgatyelwa, who appeared in the same court two weeks ago, was granted bail.

Mmotong reportedly claimed he had been assaulted and tortured by police into confessing his role in the theft.

The former personal driver of the agency’s director-general said in his affidavit police placed a plastic bag over his head to force him into a confession.

Mulaudzi said the matter needed further investigating, adding that all would be revealed in court in due course.

The theft took place on 27 December last year, when a reported R17 million in foreign currency, was stolen.
