Police launched a manhunt on Thursday after ten people were robbed and a woman was raped in Erasmia at the weekend.

Police spokesperson Constable Tumisang Moloto said the robbery occurred when the group went to fetch water from the Hennops river on Saturday.

“They were robbed at gunpoint. A 52-year-old man claims that he was with nine other people, including four women, when they were approached by seven unknown men,” Moloto said.

” The suspects… robbed them off their cellphones and bankcards. Furthermore, a 49-year-old woman claimed she was raped by the men during the robbery.”

Moloto said armed robbery and rape dockets were opened at Erasmia police station.

He urged anyone with information on the matter to come forward.

“The police are issuing a warning to…those members of the public who goes to Hennops river to pray or fetch water.”
