A house robber was shot dead and three others were arrested on Friday morning when the police conducted a stop-and-search operation in Sunnyside.

Police spokesperson Captain Colette Weilbach said the criminals robbed a house in Elardus Park early on Friday morning.

“Police received information of suspicious men who got into a minibus taxi earlier on Friday morning from Elardus Park to the Pretoria CBD.”

Weilbach said the taxi was stopped in Justice Mohammed Road in Sunnyside at 06:05. Police searched everyone inside the minibus.

“One man got out of the taxi with a hidden firearm. When police wanted to search the man, he fired a shot. Another police officer then shot and killed the suspect.”

Weilbach said three other men were then arrested. In their possession police found jewellery, laptops, cameras and other items. The stolen items were all taken during the house robbery earlier in the morning in Elardus Park.

Two unlicensed firearms and ammunition were also seized.

“The three suspects in their early thirties are from Mamelodi.  They will appear in the Pretoria Magistrate’s Court on Monday on various charges, including possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition, possession of stolen goods, attempted murder and house robbery.”

Police would investigate whether the captured men could be linked to other crimes.

The acting provincial commisioner for Gauteng, Major General Eric Nkuna and Major General Jimmy Ledwaba, cluster commander for the Sunnyside Cluster, commended the police on their vigilance and good work.
