148 arrested for various crimes at the weekend

Police arrested 148 people at the weekend during a crime prevention operation.

A total of 148 people were arrested at the weekend, in a crime prevention operation by the Sunnyside police cluster.

Spokesperson Captain Colette Weilbach said the arrests come after roadblocks and patrols from Friday until Sunday.

Twenty-one people were arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol, nine for drinking in public, 10 for being in the country illegally and eight for common robbery.

“Police also arrested a suspect for the possession of house breaking implements, four for drug-related offences and 82 for less serious crimes such as a pedestrian endangering road-users or urinating in public,” she said.

Weilbach said police issued four fines valued at R6 500 to liquor traders for failure to comply with the law.

“The suspects will appear in the Pretoria Magistrate’s Court or the Hatfield Community Court during the week,” she said.
