TUT four free
OutsourcingMustFall four protesters arrested outside the TUT West campus were released on Friday morning after appearing in Court.
The four TUT protesters arrested on Thursday morning, were released after appearing in court on Friday, confirmed #OutsourcingMustFall leader, Vusi Mahlangu.
Mahlangu said the four, who were arrested outside the Tshwane University of Technology West (TUT) campus, were released by the Pretoria Magistrate’s Court on Friday morning.
Mahlangu said he would confirm the terms of the release later.
The three men and woman’s arrest led to chaos outside the Pretoria West police station on Thursday afternoon as #OutsourcingMustFall protesters, marched to the police station to demand the release of their comrades.
Hercules police spokesperson Captain Bonginkosi Msimango said after the arrest, the rest of the protesters came to the police station to open a counter case against the police in an attempt to pressure the police.
He said the protesters had a meeting with the police to make their demands but became unruly when they were told that some of their demands could not be met.
Msimango said the four were arrested for disobeying a court order barring them from causing a disruption outside the TUT campus.
They faced charges of contravening a court interdict and public violence.
Mahlangu issued a statement to condemn the “irresponsible action” which he said was the “shooting and arrest of peaceful protesters” outside the TUT campus on Thursday.
“Police unleashed stun grenades, rubber bullets, assaulted and arrested four protesters after the collapse of talks between the TUT management and the workers.”
The protesters’ original demand was the scrapping of outsourcing by the university and a salary increase of R10 000 a month.
In the statement, the #OutsourcingMustFall protesters said the TUT management had attempted to trick workers into signing an agreement protesters had previously rejected.
“This publicly demonstrated TUT’s dishonesty on this matter,” the statement read.
