Despite three people being on trial for the R17 million, in foreign currency, stolen from the state security agency, the Hawks have confirmed the money is still nowhere to be seen.

Spokesperson Brigadier Hangwani Mulaudzi said the Hawks were still investigating.

“We will not stop investigating,” said Mulaudzi.

He confirmed three men implicated in the multimillion rand heist were out on bail, and the bail conditions were strict.

The theft took place on 26 December, and it was initially reported that R50 million had been stolen.

The arrests confirmed the suspicion that the theft was an inside job – two of the men were employed by the agency.

Albert Ramabele and William Mmotong are out on R10 000 bail each. Ramabele handed himself over to police on Friday, two weeks ago after the Hawks published his picture in the media offering a reward for any information leading to his arrest.

The third accused, Khayalethu Mgatyelwa is out on R5 000 bail.

All three accused are expected back in the Pretoria Magistrate’s Court on 18 February.

Mmotong, the former personal driver to the agency’s director-general, has reportedly claimed he was assaulted and tortured into confessing his role in the theft.

He told the court that police had placed a plastic bag over his head.

Mulaudzi said the claim needed further investigating, and added that all would be revealed in court in due course.
