#OutsourcingMustFall protests continue

#OutsourcingMustFall protesters are demanding an unconditional R10 000 monthly salary saying the current R2 100 is hardly a living wage.

An #OutsourcingMustFall protest by Tshwane metro municipal workers in the city centre turned violent on Monday.

Protestors overturned dustbins strewing litter onto the pavements and reportedly injured at least one person.

Leader of the protesters who had gathered at Church Square, Deeicious Ramatabana, said they were tired of being told lies.

“We have been contracted to the city of Tshwane for at least five years. But never have they once mentioned the prospect of taking us on as permanent employees. As far as we know the law states that no one must work on a temporary basis for more than three months without being offered a permanent position,” he said.

Ramatabana said the workers would continue striking until the metro complied with their requests.

“We are aware, though, that there are ‘rats’ among us who choose to be bused off to work while we fight for what we believe is rightfully ours. We will force the metro to listen to us until it complies,” Ramatabana said.

A woman protester said the R2 100 monthly salary was hardly enough to support her family.

“Why is the metro taking food out of our children’s mouths? The metro says we must apply for the jobs we occupy in order for us to be given permanent posts. How is that sensible?” she said.

She added that as contractors to the Tshwane metro they were given a six-month contract at a time that had been renewed at intervals over the past years.

“We are tired of this and demand a monthly salary of at least R10 000 across the board,” she said.

In a memorandum of demands [dated 13 January] handed to the Tshwane metro, the #OutsourcingMustFall movement demanded an “immediate termination of all contracts with contractors and service providers and employment of all the outsourced workers by the municipality on a permanent, full-time and decent basis”.

The workers also wanted a moratorium on all retrenchments of all workers employed in contracts and/or immediate reinstatement of all the workers recently retrenched through the termination of contracts with service providers.

The memorandum of demands listed the following metro contractors: Vat Alles, Milnex, Raucon, Big Eye, Anvin Alert, Labucon, Kodrock.

Austin Mofyoa, a spokesperson of the #outsourcingmustfall movement, said: “We hope, and believe, that there will be an amicable resolution to the issues raised, but failing which, we have every intention to fight against outsourcing to the bitter end.”
