Thieves caught red-handed

Eersterust police catch two thieves stealing from a motor vehicle.

Two men were caught red-handed stealing a car radio in the east of Eersterust on Thursday.

Eersterust police spokesperson Sergeant Sam Shibambo said the thieves, were caught in the act by patrolling police officials.

“Sergeant Frederick Jacobs and Constable Neil Lottering were doing their morning patrols in Hans Coverdale Road, when they noticed two suspicious men tampering with the door of a Volkswagen Kombi parked near Sionsberg Road,” Shibambo stated.

“As the police officials approached, the men tried to conceal the items they had in their possession.”

Shibambo said the officers reacted quickly, ordering the men to stop for a body search.

“One of the suspects tried to run away but was quickly apprehended. The officers searched the two men and found a JVC car-stereo in their possession as well as equipment used to break into cars,” Shibambo said.

Both were arrested and taken to Eersterust police station.

The owner of the Kombi, who was unaware that the thieves had been arrested, came to the police station to open a case of theft but was overjoyed to find the two police officers already working on his file.

The owner had parked his vehicle to run errands after dropping off pupils at school when the incident occurred.

“The visibly relieved owner could not hold back his joy when the officers told him they had arrested the thieves and recovered his stolen stereo,” Shibambo reported.

Eersterust police advise drivers not to leave their vehicles unattended for long periods of time and to rather take any valuables, such as removable stereo and sound equipment, out of the vehicle before leaving it unattended in an open parking area.

The thieves would appear in court soon on charges of theft from a motor vehicle and possession of suspected stolen goods.
