Bulletproof vest spares man’s life

Wicus Scheepers' (48) life was spared because he was wearing a bulletproof vest when he was attacked by intruders in his home on Cornelia Road on Friday.

When Wicus Scheepers invested in a bulletproof vest, he could not know how vital it would be to him eight years later.

The 48-year-old was shot twice, and stabbed by robbers on his smallholding, west of Pretoria, on Friday, and survived.

Scheepers said he heard his dogs growling after midnight.

Before he went outside to investigate, his wife Adrie reminded him to put on his bulletproof vest.

Two men attacked when he was outside, shooting him twice in the back. The vest stopped the bullets.

One of the attackers ran away as the second one was trying to stab Scheepers with a knife. Once again, the steel of the bulletproof vest protected him against injury.

The second man then also ran away.

Scheepers said he could not say whether the attack in Cordelia Road was a hit as crime was rife in this area.

“At this stage there is a 50-50 percent chance that I was target but it is difficult to say. I was born and raised here. I have been living here for the past 48 years and the crime here is too high.”

Scheepers complained that police had opened a business robbery docket instead of one of attempted murder, saying and would challenge police on the matter.

“How can they go and open a case of business robbery when clearly I was involved?” he asked.

He said he had not sought counselling yet as God had spared his life.

“Life must go on. It doesn’t help to sit and sulk about what happened. I am grateful to God for saving me because I would not be alive if it wasn’t for Him,” he concluded.

Hercules police spokesperson captain Bonginkosi Msimango could not be reached for comment.
