During a back to school campaign at the beginning of the year Mamelodi West police warned Mamelodi schools about gangsterism, substance abuse and dangerous weapons. However, pupils have ignored these warnings and continued with their vices.
Mamelodi police conducted unannounced patrols recently and found dangerous weapons and drugs at the schools.
Mamelodi West police spokesperson Captain Johannes Maheso said hardly a few days ago we told the pupils we will be conducting unannounced patrols at schools but the pupils ignored our warning.
On Tuesday police, joined by the community safety forum and metro police, visited Mamelodi Secondary School unannounced to search pupils and found dangerous weapons and drugs on the premises.
“Fortunately no one was found in possession of the weapons and drugs, we found it on the school’s premises,” Maheso said .
He was disappointed with the pupils for ignoring the law, in spite of talks with them during the back to school campaign in January.
“We spoke to pupils about the dangers of weapons such as knives which are not allowed on school premises or even to carry around at home, as it could cause serious harm,” said Maheso.
Police also warned the pupils against substance abuse and gangsterism, that it would destroy their future and that it was against the law.
Other unannounced patrols were held at J Kekana High School, Vukani Mawethu Secondary School and Modiri High School where police also found dangerous weapons and drugs.
Maheso said they were continuing with these unannounced patrols until schools are crime free zones.
Other things police also spoke about was violence and bullying, encouraging pupils to take their education seriously. Maheso warned pupils that bullying was against the law. No one had the right to bully other children.
Police confiscated cigarettes, dagga, knives, scissors and drugs at the school premises but no one was arrested.
Pupils were asked to report crime at 08600 10111.
