Two men were arrested in Pretoria West on Tuesday, for allegedly hijacking a cigarette truck.
It is believed the men, aged between 27 and 33, hijacked a truck transporting cigarettes in Westonaria earlier that morning, police spokesperson Captain Augustinah Selepe said.
“The truck was heading to East London from Linbro business park in Sandton when the suspects forced it and their escort off the road and seized the firearms of security officers in the vehicles,” she said.
The truck driver and crew were dropped off at different locations in Olifantsfontein and Pretoria, Selepe added.
“Police received information about the hijacked truck. The tactical response team from Pretoria central, the Gauteng flying squad and a police chopper responded and pounced on the suspects in Pretoria West,” Selepe said.
A signal jamming device was also found with the suspects, Selepe said.
Selepe said the estimated value of the cargo was R7 million.
“The men will soon appear in the Pretoria Magistrate’s Court for possession of a stolen truck and illegal possession of a network device,” she concluded.
