A 37-year-old man has been arrested in Winterveldt on Sunday, charged with the fatal stabbing of his girlfriend with a knife.

Police spokesperson Constable Petunia Chabangu said the man allegedly stabbed his 25-year-old girlfriend several times in his Winterveldt home around 01:00 on Sunday.

“The girlfriend was rushed to hospital where she was certified dead on arrival. She had lost a lot of blood,” said Chabangu.

“It is alleged that the boyfriend suspected his girlfriend was cheating on him.”

The boyfriend’s mother, who heard the woman’s screams for help, contacted police who rushed to the address.

“When the mother begged her son to stop…he threatened to kill her with the knife as well,” said Chabangu.

The mother screamed for help from the neighbours who responded quickly but her son ran away.

“Police began searching for him and around 14:00 he was arrested at a his friend’s home where he had asked for money to go into hiding,” said Chabangu.

He was expected to appear in the Ga-Rankuwa Magistrate’s Court soon.
