Pretoria Central police arrested 12 people for the possession of dagga over the weekend.

Hundreds of vehicles were also searched for illegal substances and fines were issued for unroadworthy vehicles, police spokesperson Captain Augustinah Selepe said on Monday.

“We searched 237 vehicles and 365 people during the roadblock. About 47 traffic fines were issued to the value of R35 100,” she said.

Selepe said 12 people were arrested for the possession of dagga and were expected to appear in court soon.

The operation was led by the Pretoria cluster commander Major-General David Thomas Mthombeni and involved the Tshwane metro police, Gauteng traffic police, home affairs, Telkom, Sars and the national traffic police, Selepe added.

Mthombeni said he was happy with how the operation had gone and vowed to keep the community safe.

“This year, we are applying the “back to basics” approach to policing in a bid to ensure all people are safe,” he said.
