A security officer was shot and wounded in a failed Mamelodi ATM burglary on Wednesday.
“He was wounded in the early hours of the morning when he and his colleague responded to a call-out,” said Trinity Protection services operations manager Alfred Breytenbach.
He said two men broke into the Mamelodi East Spar on Tsamaya Avenue in the early hours to get to an ATM inside the shop.
Trinity received a call from Standard Bank that its ATM had been tampered with and sent two response officers to the scene.
They found two men sitting in a parked at the shopping centre near the ATM. The men opened fire on the officers, who retaliated.
One of the officers was hit and taken to hospital.
The four would-be robbers got away, Breytenbach said.
“The quick response of our officers prevented the criminals from getting away with anything.”
More details were not immediately available.
Police spokesperson captain Jan Sepato said he would comment later.
