Tuks students to appear in court

University of Pretoria students are to appear in the Pretoria Magistrate's Court on Monday following violent protests at the institution last week.

Twenty-seven students accused of public violence were scheduled to appear in the Pretoria Magistrate’s Court on Monday.

They were arrested in #AfrikaansMustFall protests at the University of Pretoria University last week.

Violence broke out when the Economic Freedom Fighters student command (EFFSC) demanded the scrapping of Afrikaans as a language of instruction.

The students were arrested on Friday and released on bail on Saturday.

EFFSC leader Kabelo Mahlobogwane said they were released on R500 bail each.

He said on Monday morning party members were on their way to the court.

“We are leaving the campus to go support them in court. We want the charges against them to be dropped.”

The students were detained on charges of public violence and malicious damage to property after they stoned a police vehicle, damaging its windscreen.

The #OutsourcingMustFall movement has pledged its support to students who are planning a protest outside the court.
